Comic-Con 2008: Best Ever

PICTURES: http://leftyfilms.com/ComicCon08/

SUMMARY:
Got to my friend/crew/cast’s house at around 10pm Tuesday. Nick writes for DC, as I've said before, and his wife, Gwen, tends bar. Met Nick’s artist from Italy, Dani.

Got into the car on Wednesday at around 1pm. Around 3:20pm, we actually leave Los Angeles. Get into San Diego at 6pm, check into the Gaslamp Marriott (we later find out that Joss Whedon is staying there, and Nick gave him some reading material). Check into the hotel room, which will house Nick, Gwen, me, Dani, and my friend Ben Heft for the next week. Go to the convention hall. My first stop is the Blank Label Comics booth, where I chat with Steve Troop and David Willis. My friend Dom approaches and we chat for a bit. I next go to the DC booth and check out the small, small space allocated to Zuda. I go over to Frank Beddor’s booth and say hi to both Frank and Liz Cavalier. Buy a copy of The Looking Glass Wars for Dustin Ganong, my artist for the independent strip, Tales of Awesome. Frank gives me greif for “maybe not being able to make it” to his panel. I meet up with my friend, Ben Heft, from Palo Alto. Dustin is from Idaho. I go to BOOM! Studios and say hi to Michael Alan Nelson. I pick up Fall of Cthulhu TPB 1 and 2, as well as a second TPB 2 for my co-writer friend, Antoine, who is up in Canada working for Ubisoft and giving me ideas. I meet up with my friend, Lisa Hanawalt, who is at Con for the first time as an exhibitor with her book written by Olde English regular, Raphael Bob-Waksberg. Her artwork is wonderful. The book is the new American Splendor. Day goes by amazing quick. That night, Nick, Gwen, Dani, Ben, and I go out for drinks and pool with fellow writers, Bobby and Peter Timony. I lose a dollar and a business card to the sly machinations of Peter and have a nice chat about comics with Bobby.

Thursday comes and I wake up hating life for some odd reason. I stand in line for Joss Whedon, meet fellow internet denizens Chelsea Doyle and Ben King (he is from England). Whedon panel was good but it makes me realize how utterly screwed my schedule has become. There are just way too many people here, and it’s not like it’s anything gradual from last year: it’s an explosion. I go to the California Browncoats food area and meet up with Kroze, Ren, Matt Sernaker of ComicsOnline, Melissa McIntyre my new favorite person ever, Recon and Bam from the YGOTAS site, and the man himself, LK, creator of YuGiOh The Abridged Series. Pick up a Guild DVD. Luckily, Dustin, Ben, and I get into Frank’s panel at day’s end. He’s frazzled, tired, but doing one hell of a job. He even got some new readers. Had dinner with Dom, my friend Laird, and artist Luke McKay. Read Fall of Cthulhu that night.

Friday. Meet up with Armi, another internet denizen. Say hi. I make my way to Mike Nelson and shake his hand. Fall of Cthulhu 2 is a work of staggering genius. We talk for a while about Lovecraft and horror fiction. Dustin and I attend a few webcomic panels where they make fun of Timothy Buckley. Outside, I meet a guy whom is only at Con for one day, but has missed his chance to get a Guild DVD signed by Felicia Day. We exchange information, I go downstairs to the floor and I buy a second Guild DVD to have it signed on Saturday. Dave & Buster’s Night falls through, so we all go out to TGI Friday’s.

Saturday. I decide to blow off every single panel on my list in order to make tomfoolery with LK and Kroze. Get my Guild DVDs signed by Felicia Day and other Guild cast. As we follow around LK and Kroze, Ren and I talk about comics. She’s a cool girl. LK plays YuGiOh for the first time and we use Marty McFly (my HVX200) to film it. We continue to film random encounters with LK/Dan Green and cosplayers. My favorite was Dr. Horrible; had a conversation with a Browncoat about the conviction of Dr. Hammer’s trust in his penis. Went to a GeeksOn meet-up. That was fantastic. Met a bunch of awesome people, and had the chance to talk industry and feel confident about it. Met one of my idols, Lisa Lassek, who is this amazing editor. LK, Kroze, Ren, Mel, Bruce of Transformers 2 crewfame, Abbie, and others go out to a Denny’s right the heavens next to the airport. It was a walk. Kroze came home with me, and we meet up with the Geeks once more. Kroze didn’t know who they were and then I told him and he was feeling bad for himself. Honestly had the perfect opportunity to place Kroze in bed with Nick and Gwen so that Nick would wake up next to the dark haired midget, but it didn’t work.

Sunday. Zuda panel is excellent. Nick is on top of his game, and David Gallaher gives some great comments. Basically just say goodbye to everyone on the floor. Afterwords, we go back to TGI Friday’s. I say my goodbye’s.

It was a fantastic convention.

The only way that I can do CCI09 is if I move back here.

So, I have walked into my second (third?) fire of this year.

Bonny Doon is on fire and it was visible from the Barn on campus. As in "holy shit that smoke plume is right next door" visible. They even closed some of the roads leading up to the woods.

So tonight I tagged along for graduation dinner.
The sky is missing. It's been replaced with orange smoke.

Oh, and just because this journal has become a huge in-joke:

Melissa Berkson says hi, and that she misses you dearly.

and
